WGSN and Coloro have named Luminous Blue the Colour of the Year 2027, a sapphire-leaning shade unveiled with the S/S 27 key colour palette on April 29, 2025, according to the WGSN press release. Eight months on, the pick is moving from announcement into product development calendars across fashion, beauty and interiors.
The shade, and how it was chosen
Luminous Blue carries Coloro code 125-28-38 and was selected from a library of more than 3,500 hues, per Coloro. WGSN describes it as a confident, gender-inclusive blue with a reddish-purple edge, positioned around themes of interconnectedness and the exchange of ideas. The agencies frame the colour as versatile enough to run from technical outerwear to cosmetics packaging without a restyle.
The palette it arrives with
The 2027 colour was revealed alongside five S/S 27 key colours, named for spring 2027: Luminous Blue, Energy Orange (018-57-34), Pop Pink, Meadowland Green (050-61-19) and Clay. WGSN positions the group as a balance of high-energy accents and restorative mid-tones, a pairing the agency says reflects demand for both stimulation and recovery in the same wardrobe.
Why the two-year lead matters
The 2027 announcement follows the rhythm WGSN and Coloro have used for previous cycles: Transformative Teal was named for 2026, and the 2028 colour has since been previewed in trade channels. A two-year horizon is designed to land before dyehouse bookings, fabric development and packaging tooling are locked, per WGSN. The agency cites a 94 per cent forecast accuracy rate for its colour programme, a figure brands weigh when committing to a hue at the textile stage.
What got less attention
- Trade coverage outside fashion arrived late but wide: jewelry-industry publication Plumb Club picked up the announcement on December 29, 2025, a sign the shade is being read as a hard-luxury metal-and-stone story, not only a runway one.
- The pick contrasts with Pantone's approach for 2026, Cloud Dancer, a near-white. Two forecasts pointing in opposite directions — saturated sapphire versus quiet neutral — leave brands reconciling which end of the emotional spectrum their spring 2027 buys sit on.
- WGSN also released F/W 27-28 key colours, including Russet, Peaceful Lilac, Maize and Deep Green, giving suppliers a two-season runway from a single briefing.
What it changes for the industry
For product teams, January 2026 is the practical deadline: colour approval now means securing dyestocks and lab dips nearly a year ahead of the 2027 shelf date. Retail buyers reading the S/S 27 palette should expect Luminous Blue to surface first in accessories and performance categories, where colour adoption cycles are shortest, before it reaches tailored clothing. The shade's commercial test will be whether it reads as a wearable classic on the street rather than a press-release blue.
